Nicolò Amati- violin 1628
This pristine violin bears an authentic Antonio & Hieronymus (Girolamo) Amati label but was actually made by Nicolò. Made of golden-varnished spruce and maple, the quality of the violin is similar to the quality of the violins made by Nicolò Amati’s grandfather, Andrea.
Top: two-piece, spruce
Back: two-piece, maple
Purchased by the National Music Museum from Laurence Witten family, New Haven, Connecticut, 1984.
